France is a country with a proud and dramatic history and strong noble traditions. The culture was influenced by Romans in the south and Normans in the north but still today remains distinct and so wonderfully French. During the medieval ages and up until the revolution, the aristocrats yielded substantial influence and held a number of privileges.
French heraldry has a long and proud history, dating all the way back to the 11th century. French law recognises both assumed and inherited arms, considering them under law to be equivalent to a visual representation of a name, and given the same protections, and many of the features in international heraldry come from France.
French heraldry has some distinctive features of it own, and as a Seigneur (Lord) or Châtelain de Massanes you will be entitled to use the exclusive château coat-of-arms.
This unique yet classic coat-of arms incorporates heraldic elements from the original château coat-of-arms.

The fesse with a naval anchor and two hearts is a tribute to the 18th century château coat-of-arms (pictured below). A heraldic anchor is an emblem of salvation and hope, initially tied to safety and stability, over time the maritime anchor has also been used as a symbol for broader meanings. For example, as a part of Christian tradition, this object has quickly become a message of hope towards the future: the anchor symbolises a brilliant, happy life. It is also an appropriate device for the coat of arms of a family with seafaring traditions.
The heart is the symbol for love. Often known as the seat of emotions, the heart is synonymous with affection. In ecclesiastical heraldry the heart may symbolise the Sacred Heart.
In heraldry, the castle has often been granted to one who has faithfully held a castle for his sovereign, or who has captured on by force or stratagem. The castle signifies spiritual power and vigilance on the watch as well as home and safety. The tower is very similar to this and is an emblem of grandeur and society.
The castle in our coat-of-arms is also a symbol of our cause, namely the preservation of the Château de Massanes. The motto ‘Serva castrum’ proudly reflects our work. The castle and tower symbolism is also reflected in the coat-of-arms.
